NMBU's Professor Jon Swenson participates in the multinational Scandinavian Brown Bear Project which involves scientists from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, UK, USA, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands and France as well as others affiliated with Norwegian national research institutions, colleges and universities at Ås, Tromsø, Trondheim and Hedmark.
... Goals of the project are to study the natural history of brown bears and to make policy recommendations for conservation. The project uses biochemistry in at least two different ways: 1) DNA markers for identifying individual bears and 2) physiological studies of bear behavior. Brown bears are critically endangered in Norway today with a population size in 2014 of 136 individuals. According to official government policy in relation to accepted population sizes and conservation guidelines set by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, brown bears in Norway are expected always to be critically endangered (1).
