The conference “Repair of Endogenous DNA Damage" is arranged once every three years. The country hosting the event alters between the USA and Europe. In 2017 this 6th EU-US Conference took place from the 24th to 28th of September in the venue of the University of Udine, North East Italy, where 200 scientists from all over the world met to share knowledge and establish new collaborations.
Despite the apparent stability of the DNA molecule, the bases and backbone are vulnerable to chemical modifications or damages. The (endogenous or spontaneous) factors afflicted by the cell itself, or exogenous physical and chemical agents, cause base modifications by hydrolytic, alkylation and oxidation reactions. The consequences of such modifications are mutations and cytotoxicity due to the block of the replication etc. The single and double strand DNA breaks are other types of dangerous damage for the cells that leads to cell cycle arrest. The different types of DNA repair pathways fix all kind of damage.
The conference “Repair of Endogenous DNA Damage" focuses on the cellular response to naturally formed genomic damage and how the defects in these responses are associated with cancer, neurological disorders and premature aging. The diverse scientific talks are arranged in ten sessions according to the type of the DNA repair system and the object of study.
