Thanks to the funding of NBS I was able to attend the ICAR conference (International Conference on Arabidopsis Research) 2018 which was held for the first time in Northern Europe namely in Turku, Finland from the 25th to 29th of June. This is an annual gathering which brings together over 800 plant researchers from all over the world.
... I am a master student and this was my first big international conference. Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) is a small weed which became one of the most widely used model organism in plant research. Its genome was fully sequenced in the year 2000 and it is fully annotated. Although the main focus was of course on A. thaliana, there were for me surprisingly many projects presented that used other plant species like tomato, barley and maize. The research on these, not necessarily as handy and fastgrowing species, is becoming accessible and affordable by the use of genome editing techniques and faster and improved sequencing techniques. This makes it possible to transfer gained and proven knowledge from A. thaliana to for example crop plants that are agricultural relevant and beneficial, but which do not essentially fit the model-organism-standards.
The conference consisted of main presentations, sessions with different topics that were held simultaneously in three halls, workshops (coming back to those later) and poster sessions. I got the opportunity to present my project in form of a poster with
