For the last several years, NMBU has collaborated with the University of Saskatchewan (US) in Canada on plant research. One of the most exciting areas of research at US involves the development of crop plants adapted to low light intensities by researcher MPM Nair. Selection for photosynthetically adapted plants may also be a strategy for new variety development in low-light intensity Norway.
When most of us think about agricultural production, we think of a farm field on a sunny day in July with light intensities corresponding to 1000-2000 µM/m2/h. Most crop plants have maximum photosynthesis at these light intensities. On the other hand, shade tolerant plants (e.g. most house plants) grow quite well in a windowsill with light intensities 40-100 µM/m2/h. MPM Nair speculated that crop plants could be developed for low light intensities.
