The Bacterial Protein Export 2018 (BPE18) was held at Leuven, Belgium over three days from September 30th - October 3rd. The conference, sponsored by the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) contained a packed program targeted at backgrounds ranging from microbiology to biochemistry, with more than 60 talks, and 78 posters, and around 180 participants.
The conference was held at the old Catholic University located in the small city center of the quiet university town of Leuven, around 30 minutes east of Brussels by train. The topic was everything related to bacterial protein export, which turned out to be very broad, with talks covering topics from fundamental bacterial genetics, biochemistry, structural biology, protein dynamics, and single molecule biophysics. Since I'm working specifically with autotransporter adhesins, a group of the type V secretion system, this conference turned out to be very relevant for me.
Bacterial Protein Export is an essential function in all bacteria, encompassing among others secretion, biogenesis of organelles such as pili and flagella, compartmentalization of proteins, nutrient acquisition, export of virulence factors, such as bacterial adhesins and toxins as well as assembly of secretion channels. Export of these proteins involves transport
