Our focus on antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) has been encouraged by the development of antibiotic resistance worldwide and by the fact that very few new antibiotics have been approved in recent years.
... With the increased incidence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria both in medicine (human pathogens) and in different areas like agricultural and marine systems, there is a need for novel compounds with new mechanism of actions that can fight antimicrobial resistant bacteria effectivity - or compounds that can influence and/or fight back the resistance development. Development of antibiotic resistance is one of the major challenges the world today. According to the WHO, we are heading towards a time that resembles the pre-antibiotics area again. That is frightening. Here, I would like to focus on some of our results of AMP research and how we have worked to bring forward new basic knowledge about how the compounds work and how we can use this information to design new molecules with more optimal activities (Fig. 1).
