With the development and widespread application of next-generation sequencing tools in Evolutionary Biology it has become invaluable to possess good computational programming skills. Such skills are specifically relevant for scientists who wish to analyse high-throughput sequencing data. Thanks to a grant from NBS I was able to attend the course "Programming for Evolutionary Biology" which covered
...the bases of Unix, Python and R. This course was organized by Katja Nowick and Rui Faria and was held February 10-27at the University of Leipzig, Germany. It was great to have this opportunity because these tools will be essential to develop my PhD project on semen microbiome where I will be looking at how bacteria in semen may affect reproductive success in a passerine species. In this 18-days course, the 27 participants acquired basic programming skills during hands-on lectures based on different topics in Evolutionary Biology.
