On the 3rd to 6th of April 2016, I had the pleasure of attending the International Discussion Meeting "Förster resonance energy transfer in life sciences - FRET 2", thanks to a travel grant from NBS. The meeting took place at the Max Planck institute in Göttingen, Germany. There were 180 participants, which allowed for good talks and fruitful discussions. My interest in this meeting was to
...establish a network within the community and learn about the various applications of this technique, as it is integral for my project. FRET is an imaging technique that provides the opportunity to study molecular interactions inside living cells with great spatiotemporal resolution. In this technique, two fluorophores change their fluorescence behavior depending on their proximity to each other. The excited donor fluorophore transfers its energy to a nearby acceptor fluorophore, via a dipoledipole coupling. The emitted energy from the acceptor can then be used to calculate the FRET efficiency, which in turn allows us to determine the distance between the two. Theodore Förster was the first to successfully calculate the FRET efficiency, and established the Förster distance. He published what is now known as the "FRET bible" in 1946. The Meeting was first held on the 100th anniversary of his birth and was again held this year, 2016, due to its previous success. The main focus of the meeting was to discuss newly developed methods, probes, and the use of biosensors, all of which being of interest to me for my newly initiated project.
The meeting, although short, was packed. Each day was divided into three main presentation topics, consisting of 4-7 presentations each, a poster session and parallel evening discussions. The presenters were a good mix between well establish leading scientis
